Woman Without Love

Luis Bunuel based A Woman Without Love on Guy de Maupassant´s short story Pierre et Jean, and it bears the marks of the director´s "Mexican years" during the 1950s when he produced a series of brilliant, satirical masterpieces.

An unhappily married woman indulges in a brief, torrid affair with an engineer, but then refuses to leave her elderly husband. Twenty-five years later, the lover leaves a fortune to her son, causing an uproar.

Bunuel undermines the soap opera plot by stripping the characters of any vestige of nobility, cruelly exposing their selfishness and bourgeois hypocrisy.
