Based on the Liebermann Papers novels by Frank Tallis, the series is set in Vienna, Austria, in 1906 and the years that follow. Franz Joseph rules the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Adolf Hitler will soon arrive to study art, and the First World War is only a few years away.

Max Liebermann (Matthew Beard) is a brilliant young English-born student of the famed psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud. When he crosses paths with Oskar Rheinhardt (Juergen Maurer), a Detective Inspector grappling with a puzzling case, Max agrees to assist him in investigating a series of unusual and disturbing murders.
