Amnesty International spearheaded the long-awaited arrest with help from the Spanish and British governments, but faced a pro-Pinochet publicity campaign masterminded by one of the dictator´s few allies, former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. As the dissenting faction pushed for a extradition trial, 500 days passed with Pinochet held under house arrest in an exclusive suburban London community.
