Nora McPhee (four-time Oscar-nominee Marsha Mason) is a widowed high school English teacher with a falling-apart house, a broken-down car and a headed-for-trouble teenage son (Matthew Broderick in his movie debut). One rainy night, her long-lost father Max Dugan (two-time Oscar-winner Jason Robards) arrives on her doorstep with six months to live and 7,000 in sort-of stolen money. But even if Nora can keep Max´s true identity a secret from his curious grandson and an amorous-though-suspicious police detective (Donald Sutherland), will this smooth-talking con man find a way to change the luck and lives of the family he never had?
