On the eve of America´s entry into World War II, Colonel Effingham (Charles Coburn) retires to his hometown of Fredricksville, Georgia, where his love for America leads him on a crusade to preserve the Confederate Monument Square. Mobilizing the town´s upright citizens against corrupt local government, the Colonel leads an unforgettable assault on City Hall.
