NYC radio journalist Johnny (Joaquin Phoenix) found his job niche traveling the country and asking kids their perspectives-and he'd need whatever insights he'd gleaned when his estranged sister Viv (Gaby Hoffman) asked him to come to Oakland and look after his bipolar 9-year-old nephew Jesse (Woody Norman).
