Guy, 26, lives in the sleepy oceanside town of Bedford Springs. Feeling trapped by his small-town surroundings, hopelessly unemployed, and six weeks behind on his rent, Guy's sinking quickly. He needs to make a change - and fast. Guy's closest and only friend is Carl. A little dopey but kindhearted, Carl's trapped too: he's desperate to break up with Julie, his chain-smoking girlfriend, and move out of the house he shares with his hideously overweight mother. Driving by the beach one morning, Guy meets a mysterious and beautiful young woman - The Girl.

After comparing notes about, among other things, philosophy and sex, Guy realizes he's finally found someone he can relate to, and the pair become lovers. With a new life finally within reach, but still seriously low on cash, Guy enlists Carl in the break-in of an abandoned factory he believes holds cash from a bank robbery. But Guy's scheme quickly begins to unravel, and his life takes a turn he could never predict...
