All Quiet On The Western Front
The film follows a group of young German soldiers whose early enthusiasm for World War I is steadily worn away by the realities of life at the front. Through a series of stark, memorable episodes, the film traces their journey from idealism to exhaustion and loss, focusing on Paul Baumer as he comes to understand that survival, not heroism, is the only remaining goal. One of the earliest and most influential anti-war films, director Lewis Milestone's adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque's novel won the Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director. (1930)
