Series 1

A devastating flood hits a Yorkshire town, leaving three people dead – one, an unidentified man, is found in a lift in a flooded underground car park. PC Jo Marshall, a dedicated officer who is about to embark on a training course to become a detective, is first on the scene. It’s initially assumed the man became trapped in the rising flood waters – but the assumption’s wrong: he actually died several days earlier. With her colleagues slow to act, and with her maternity leave fast approaching, Jo becomes obsessed with the case. Convinced he was murdered; Jo takes drastic steps to get to the truth and prove her worth as a detective – but the consequences will change her life forever.

Series 2

A year on from the explosive hook of Series 1, Jo Marshall is now a detective. As tensions simmer in Waterside amid the rising threat of moorland fires and the subsequent risk of further flooding, a man’s body is found in perplexing circumstances: it appears he was shot after death.

In the aftermath, Jo arrests a charismatic man who appears to have valuable information. But when he escapes custody and turns up dead himself, also shot after death, Jo finds herself following the trail of a baffling double murder investigation. With no clear link between the two victims, Jo has to act fast to uncover the truth before anyone else is killed.

But she must balance her race to stop the killer with a much more personal investigation, as she and Pat work on bringing down their corrupt boss, Sergeant Mackie. It will require them to operate in secret if they are to have any hope of rooting out the corruption that has blighted the town’s police force – and Jo’s own family – for decades.
