The Illini fought back to overcome a 15 point second half deficit when Head's 3-pointer tied the game at 70-70 with only 2:39 to go. North Carolina regained the lead, when Marvin Williams tipped in a lay-up attempt by Rashad McCants with 1:39 left, and kept it until the end North Carolina defeated Illinois 75-70, winning its fourth NCAA championship and coach Roy Williams' first title. Sean May's 26 total points, mirrored his father Scott May's 26 points in leading Indiana to the 1976 national title.
