Chicago, July 13, 1966 - 5:30 a.m.

This summer of 1966 has been indeed a long and hot one as America is still reeling from racial tensions and foreign wars, but nothing compares to what happened last night in a sleepy suburban community on the south side of Chicago.

On this particularly steamy July night, the Windy City was haunted by the menacing acts of Richard Speck. Driven by anger and revenge, spurned on drugs, Speck walked into a boarding house and systematically terrorized eight nursing students. But what he never counted on was the will of one woman to survive.
