Paris Underground

An exciting and atmospheric World War II story set in German-occupied France based on Etta Shiber´s bestselling novel. The film is the story of two women in Nazi-infested Paris, one a glamorous American (played by Hollywood glamour gal Constance Bennett) married to an official of the French foreign office and the other a docile middle-aged Britisher (legendary music hall star Gracie Fields in her last motion picture performance) who organize an underground organization to smuggle Allied troops out of the country.

Tautly and dramatically directed by Gregory Ratoff, this is a marvelous drama, impeccably acted by all concerned (Bennett also produced the film), and with an involving, constantly interesting storyline based on true facts, the film successfully authenticates the tense drama of the Paris underground movement during the waning days of the ware.

Beautifully photographed by Academy Award-winning Lee Garmes, this rarely seen motion-picture was recently restored by the British Film Institute and Wade Williams from the only existing 35mm negative. It is a tribute to unsung heroes of the European underground, an organization responsible for saving countless military and civilian lives in those troubled times.
