With a stranglehold on the town, corrupt Judge Ezra Barnes uses a desperado, The Utah Kid, to disrupt completion of a telegraph line. The hired gun confronts utility engineer Steve Collins (Johnny Mack Brown), stealing his clothes and horse. The outlaw manages to infiltrate the telegraph company posing as Steve, but kills a manager during a violent skirmish and flees.

Trotting into town on the Utah Kid´s horse, the real Steve is mistaken for the hunted felon and is jailed. The Judge releases him on false pretenses, sending "the criminal" to work for Bert Lawler, one of his henchmen at the telegraph company. Steve speeds progress instead of slowing it, all the while pretending he´s part of the Judge´s plot. Wary of his underling´s loyalty, Bert leads a massive cavalry attack on the entire operation.
